Family tree software
Chronicler
A desktop app for collecting your family's history: people, their portraits, life dates, and family ties. The tree builds itself by generation, with couples and their children, and you can easily rearrange the cards with the mouse.
Features
What Chronicler does
Person card
Name, sex, date and place of birth, and a note. If the exact day is unknown, the year is enough. You can search for people by name and note text.
Portraits and photo gallery
Add a portrait from a file or from the clipboard. Each person can have a gallery of captioned photos: look at a picture up close and mark the people from the tree on it.
Relations
Parents, children, spouses, brothers, and sisters. Grandparents, grandchildren, great-grandparents, and great-grandchildren are worked out for you. Add a wedding date and mark children from a second or third marriage.
The tree
Generations line up in rows by themselves. Move cards and lines with the mouse, or select several cards with Shift and move them together.
Life events
Service, education, moves, and other events with a date, place, and note. On the Events tab they form a life timeline together with birth, weddings, and children's births, and each one shows the age.
Printing on A4
A large tree is split into sheets whose edges overlap slightly: print them and glue them together. You can also save the tree as a JPEG picture.
GEDCOM import
Bring a tree over from another genealogy app with a .ged file (versions 5.5, 5.5.1, and 7.0): people, families, dates, places, and events.
One project file
The tree lives in a single .chronicle file together with all the photos. Every change is written to a working copy right away, so unsaved edits aren't lost after a crash.
Together
Works with Close Circle
The Close Circle phone app stores people, birthdays, and the relations between them. Save a backup from it and open the backup in Chronicler with File → Import: people, photos, and kinship land in the tree.
It works the other way too: File → Export creates a file that Close Circle imports and then reminds you about birthdays.
No sign-up, no cloud Chronicler never uploads your tree. It goes online only to check for updates, and you can turn that check off in the settings.
